Toilet training to Independence for Children with Severe and Profound Developmental Disabilities

Toilet training to Independence for Children with Severe and Profound Developmental Disabilities

A Manual for Trainers ...This book is a revision of the earlier manual published in 1982 by Charles C. Thomas in the US. The revisions consist of updated terminology, descriptions of more effective equipment and where to obtain it, and additional solutions to a range of problems.

The program was designed to meet the needs of people with severe or profound developmental disabilities who were not progressing with the training techniques commonly used by parents, teachers and residential staff. It has also been useful for children who have learned some toileting skills, but whose slow progress is denying them access to appropriate educational and developmental opportunities. It was specially designed to overcome many of the learning difficulties resulting from developmental disabilities.

The training program not only uses more intensive teaching procedures, but each task in the toileting chain is taught separately one after the other and the environment during training is more controlled than is usually necessary.

Many parts of the program can be used alone within other approaches to toilet training.  For example, the procedures to teach 'pants up' or 'pants down' can be added to a less intensive program when the trainee is having special difficulty learning and performing these tasks.
